Description
Sampler stitched by Sarah Ann Wilson featuring alphabets, numbers, and a house surrounded by smaller motifs.
Content description
Sampler stitched by Sarah Ann Wilson in the early 19th century, featuring polychrome silk threads on a beige linen ground. The entirety of the sampler is worked in cross stitch. The first half of the sampler is covered in alphabets, with each letter worked twice and followed by numerals in rows where there is room. The sampler uses blue, red, yellow, green, beige, and cream threads.
Below the alphabet is the maker's name, Sarah Ann Wilson. The bottom half of the sampler is largely left empty and while some of the threads on surviving motifs have disappeared, a lack of holes suggests the sampler was left unfinished. In the centre of this space is a house motif with six yellow windows. In the top left corner of this bottom half, barely visible, is a smaller house motif, worked in beige thread. There are two dog motifs and other lines and partially-worked motifs in the corners of this bottom half.
It has thus far proven impossible to identify the Sarah Ann Wilson who made this sampler, given the commonness of her name and her sampler's lack of date and other identifying information.
