Embroidered picture frame with silk embroidery, worked by the Royal School of Art Needlework in 1887 or 1897 to celebrate one of Queen Victoria's jubilees.
Content description
Embroidered picture frame likely made in 1887 or 1897, worked in silk embroidery on satin and featuring roses, shamrocks, thistles with crowns, and initials VR at top two corners. The piece is worn, with splits in silk, and has been netted and mounted for conservation. The pink roses are worked in satin stitch with tiny single chains for the centres. The shamrocks and thistle stems are worked in satin stitch, with the purple thistle in long and short stitch. The twining brown stems are worked in stem stitch. The crowns are also in satin stitch and the red initials in stem stitch.
This frame, which would have likely held a photograph of Queen Victoria, was designed and presumably made at the Royal School of Art Needlework in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Golden (1887) or Diamond (1897) Jubilee. The RSN, at the time the RSAN, made a number of this type of embroidered frame, additional examples of which can be found in various National Trust properties.
