Description

Small beadwork panel from the second half of the 19th century, depicting two blue pansy-like flowers and accompanying buds.

Content description

Beadwork floral panel dating to the second half of the 19th century, which features two flowers and two buds. The flowers are somewhat pansy-like, with blue petals and yellow and red centres. The buds are yellow. They are accompanied by several leaves of multiple shades of green. The panel's background is made up of white beads and its border consists of yellow, orange, red, and blue beads in a pattern that is reminiscent of twisted cord. The beads have been applied to the linen ground using a series of whip stitches. The panel has been conservation mounted onto fabric-covered board.

Examples of English beadwork panels with bold floral motifs can be seen on many items from the mid-19th century onwards. They might be used to adorn purses, panels, pouches, and jewellery boxes.
