Content description

An 18th-century Italian burse panel embroidered in metal thread and coloured silks on crimson red silk. There is a central cross motif with foliated arms embroidered with very fine gold passing thread strapping over padding, with couched fine gold twist rays in groups of three radiating from each quarter of the cross. This is surrounded by gold arabesque scrolls in passing thread couched in a bricking pattern and outlined with fine twist, linked with white silk long and short stitch and couched twist metalwork collars, and four silk shaded flowers in shades of pink with yellow centres and green and yellow silk shaded leaf sprays. Mounted on a board covered with dark green cotton fabric. This object is typical of Italian ecclesiastical embroidery in this period, with its inclusion of naturalistic shaded flowers and mixture of silk and metal threads.
