Description
Mid 19th-century petit point picture illustrating a rendition of Aldermaston Court in the 17th century, donated to the RSN by Queen Mary.
Content description
A mid 19th-century petit point picture embroidered in wool and silk tent and back stitches in shades of cream and brown with red and blue details, representing a scene from Aldermaston Court in the 17th century. Two women, a man, a child, and a dog are shown in 17th-century dress standing on an ornately carved staircase. The picture is framed in its original frame.
The image depicted is based on a lithograph entitled 'The Staircase, Aldermaston', Plate II in Joseph Nash's four-volume work The Mansions of England in the Olden Time (London: Thomas McLean, 1839-1849). The embroiderer has added the figures of the lady on the landing and the man halfway up the stairs, not present in the source image. This embroidery was given to the Royal School of Needlework in 1937 by Queen Mary, Queen of the United Kingdom and British Dominions and Empress of India, wife of King George V.
