Description

Churchwork sampler worked in 1912 by A. Scott, a student at the Royal School of Art Needlework.

Content description

Churchwork sampler worked in 1912 by A. Scott while a student at the Royal School of Art Needlework. This piece is deliberately part worked in order to show various goldwork padding techniques. The motifs used are a fleur de lis, a lily, a Tudor rose, a pomegranate, a monogram, some decorative borders, and some other floral motifs.

The padding techniques include felt, soft string, hard string, and satin stitch padding. The stitches used are long and short, couching, trellis, basketweave (goldwork), stem, split, French knots, and satin. There is also beading on one of the decorative borders.

Several of the motifs have been left only partially completed in order to illustrate how they are worked. There are several instances of instructional text written in ink, such as 'Corded ready for gold work' in the top right corner and '4 Methods of padding' along the bottom. Also written are 'Church Embroidery Sampler' and 'A. Scott 1912'.
