Circa late 19th-century embroidered Chinese panel showing auspicious symbols.
Content description
Circa late 19th-century Chinese panel with a ground of pink patterned silk embroidered with blue, white, and gold silk and metal threads. The embroidery is worked in satin stitch, slanted satin stitch, and Chinese knots with long tails and includes outlines in couched Japanese gold thread. At the centre is a chrysanthemum. In one corner is a peony and in two other corners are butterflies. There are also other flowers and auspicious symbols, including what may be the 'two cups' symbol common in Chinese embroidery. Peonies represent wealth and honour, chrysanthemums longevity and dignity, and butterflies fertility and abundance. The purpose of this small embroidery is unknown, but its inclusion of auspicious symbols suggests it may have been associated with a special occasion.
