Description
Silk shaded picture of magnolias worked by Margaret Bartlett in approximately the 1940s.
Content description
A silk shaded picture of magnolias worked by Margaret Bartlett in approximately the 1940s. While many examples of silk shading use cotton thread on silk, this piece is worked in silk thread throughout, giving it additional lustre. The magnolias are worked on a light lavender silk ground using long and short stitch in shades of pink, purple, and white, while their stems and leaves are rendered in long and short and split stitches in shades of green, brown, yellow, and white. The RSN Archive contains the watercolour used for inspiration on this piece.
Miss Margaret Bartlett graduated from the Royal School of Needlework Training School Programme in the 1930s with high marks. She went on to manage the RSN Workroom and Studio, as well as producing or contributing to a number of other pieces within the RSN Collection today (with examples including RSN.2788 and COL.58).
