Description

Circa 1830 small cross stitch sampler with nine motifs.

Content description

Circa 1830 small cross stitch sampler with nine motifs. Worked in small, colourful cross stitch on an evenweave linen ground, this sampler features two butterflies, two flower motifs, a bird on a branch, two baskets of flowers, a small folly in the woods, and a large tree. Each cross stitch is worked over two threads in each direction, making for tiny and delicate stitches. The crosses go in different directions throughout each motif. This piece is typical of the period, with pixelated cross stitch motifs reminiscent of the early days of Berlin wool work.
