Description

Goldwork sampler made by Kathleen Muriel Froude in Singapore in 1960.

Content description

Goldwork sampler made by Kathleen Muriel Froude in Singapore in 1960, featuring a symmetrical floral and leaf motif around a central thistle-like design on a dark red silk ground. It has a number of leaves worked in Japanese thread and involves bricking, both straight and in circles, passing thread in basketweave and couched patterns, gold chipping and spangles, and cutwork check and smooth purl over padding and outlined in pearl purl. The side stems are smooth purl cutwork over padding with a pearl purl outline and with silver plate highlights. The central motif features a blue appliquéd fabric centre with a delicate gold trellis laid over top and surrounded by Japanese thread in brick couching. The centre-surrounding leaves are made of appliquéd gold and silver fabric and outlined with couched passing. The top of the centre motif is a fleur-de-lis shape with wings in couched gold check, a centre of brick-couched passing, and two antennae with beads.

Kathleen Muriel Froude lived in Singapore from 1957 to 1960 and during that time assisted with the repair and replacement of kneelers, tapestries, and other ecclesiastical embroideries at St Andrew's Cathedral in Singapore.
