Description
Pair of circa 1660 Stuart slips depicting flowers in rococo stitches, worked in silk threads and appliqued onto unbleached linen.
Content description
Two small, circa 1660 slips showing flowers worked in rococo stitches. The leaves and petals of both flowers are worked in blue, yellow, and green silk threads. The first has a line of red at the top and its stem and top details are made of a series of back stitches. The second flower's stem and top petals are made of back stitches that resemble tent. Both flowers have outlines made of gimp thread that has been couched down.
These two flowers were stitched on a fine linen, cut out, and then applied at some point onto a linen with a looser weave. Whether they were originally intended as slips, motifs (usually floral) stitched on one fabric and then cut out to be applied onto another, or were saved from a deteriorating object is unknown.
