Description
Panel showing the coat of arms of the Pineles family, made at the Royal School of Needlework in 1982.
Content description
Coat of arms of the Pineles family, made at the Royal School of Needlework for Edward Pineles in 1982. The immense coat of arms shows two shields, the viewer's left one showing a double headed eagle holding in its talons a snake and six-petalled flower or star, and the shield on the viewer's right showing at the top two red keys on a yellow background and at the bottom a golden harp on a red background. The shield showing the double headed eagle is the coat of arms of Edward Pineles, while the other is that of Monica Teresa Moss, his wife.
The crest at the top shows a bear claw with red claws. The helmet above the shield faces to the viewer's left, and the mantle is made of white and red foliage. At the bottom of the piece is the motto 'RESURGAM', Latin for 'I will rise again'. This central imagery is surrounded on all four sides by a border of goldwork foliage on a red velvet ground. In each corner is a snake coiling around a star.
This piece involves goldwork, silk shading, and applique. The coat of arms has been worked almost entirely in long and short stitches in silk threads, with each shield bordered by couched passing threads. The motto sits on a banner which is bordered by couched passing threads. The motto itself is worked in slanted satin stitch. The motto and shields are worked on silk, while the background of the entire piece is blue wool. The border is worked in bullion, twist, passing, pearl purl, and spangles in gold and silver. Techniques involved include chipping, couching, bricking, various goldwork applications, and S-ing.
This embroidery took the Royal School of Needlework Studio five years to complete, the slowing process illustrated by the snail on the viewer's bottom right-hand side. Accompanying the snail is a signature of sorts, reading 'RSN 1982'.
