Description

Purple velvet ribbonwork purse worn to a 1839 wedding at Doddington Hall.

Content description

A deep purple velvet purse with a drawstring, flaps, and ribbonwork embroidery, worn to a wedding at Doddington Hall at 1839. The edges are corded with a cream cord and the drawstring is a pale lilac woven tape. The purse is lined with cream silk and some restoration net has been added on the drawstring channel.

The front of the purse has a border of green and gold leaves worked in silk with white flower buds in a loose linen ribbon. A swag of flowers includes fern-like leaves worked in brown, cream, and green chenille, a stem of bladderwort-type flowers in pale pink ribbon and net, three white net carnation-type flowers, some honeysuckle worked in net with French knot stamens, three Edelweiss-style flowers with net petals and brown ribbon centres, grasses in shades of green ribbon, and a cluster of small white flowers in ribbon. The front flap has a band of white buds, green leaves, and white flowers all worked in silk and ribbon.

The back of the purse has the same border of green and gold leaves worked in silk with white flower buds in a loose linen ribbon. The border surrounds a bouquet of flowers containing fern-like leaves worked in brown, cream, and green chenille, two stems of Edelweiss-type flowers and buds worked in cream net and ribbon, three carnation-type flowers in white ribbon, a stem of Bladderwort-style flowers in cream net, and a French knot. The flap at the back has a spray of smaller cream flowers, grasses, and a few carnation-type flowers.

This may have been used by a member of the bridal party of a wedding held at Doddington Hall in Lincolnshire in 1839. Held on 12th December, the marriage was between John Bromhead Esq. of Lincoln and Anne Fector Jarvis, the youngest daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel G.R.P. Jarvis.
