This piece was stitched by Marion Kinsley, who entered it into The Patriotic Needlework Competition. This competition was organised by the Daily Sketch newspaper in 1915, in the midst of World War I. Its aim was to encourage women to contribute to the war effort through their needlework skills. Participants could enter various categories and winners received recognition and prizes. Kinsley's work was awarded a certificate 'for excellence of work exhibited at the Central Hall, Westminster, November 4th, 5th, and 6th, 1915'. The works were judged by the Royal School of Art Needlework and it was signed on their behalf by the school's principal, Evelyn Bradshaw, and on behalf of the Daily Sketch by Mrs Gossip. Some information on the needlework competition can be found in volume 64 of the Journal of the Royal Society of Arts.
