Description
Darning sampler stitched by Mary Quinton in November 1834.
Content description
Square darning sampler stitched on fine cotton organdy (also spelled organdie) with silk threads. The sampler features nine darning crosses, each with a different darning pattern, in brown, cream, green, yellow, pink, and blue threads. In the centre, framing the central darned cross, is the inscription, 'Mary Quinton November 1834'. This inscription is worked in tiny black cross stitches. This tells us the maker of the sampler and when she stitched her piece.
Though there are too many Mary Quintons born in the approximate time period to identify the one who made this sampler, we know from another sampler in the Royal School of Needlework collection that Mary was born in 1822 or 1823, making her 11 or 12 when she made this sampler. The sampler has been mounted on fabric-covered board, so the back is not visible.
