Content description
Cream lace pillow cover with surviving silk pillow, circa 1900-1930. The pillow is pink and the pillow cover features a needlelace centre and bobbin lace border and motifs. In the centre is a man with a pipe, a woman with a basket of flowers, and a child with a goat. The trio of figures wear classical dress. The figures are worked in buttonhole stitches and buttonhole bars, possibly with the addition of single Brussels stitch, with cordonnet outlines and details on a droschel ground. There are small areas of needlelace filling and pulled work on the figures. The figures are surrounded by an elaborate floral and scrollwork frame, which is made of Brussels or Bruges-style bobbin lace.
The motif was likely copied from print material, and is reminiscent of toile de Jouy. Boudoir pillows of this sort were popular in the first several decades of the 20th century.
