Description

Circular beadwork bag, likely dating to the 1830s, with a floral sunburst design in turquoise, pink, white, yellow, and green beads. Framed by a metal clasp and a beaded blue fringe of loops.

Content description

This circular circa 1830s beadwork bag is worked in a primarily floral design in tiny turquoise, pink, white, yellow, and green beads. The bag is knitted with beads threaded onto cream-coloured silk thread. Its two sides are attached with silk threads to a silver or steel frame with imitation jewel insets.

A pink and green sunburst design sits in the centre, surrounded by a floral and paisley design in green, yellow, pink, and white beads. The background of this central section is made of turquoise beads. This central design is bordered by a pattern of red and yellow beadwork roses and other flowers. This outside border has a white background and is flanked on both sides by a narrow border of brown beads. Both sides of the bag are identical.

The bag is missing its chain handle. It is now very difficult to open but likely has a silk interior. Some of its original border of looped fringe made from blue beads survives.
