Description
Square panel of zardozi embroidery depicting peacock and feathers, stitched in India in the late 19th or early 20th century.
Content description
This square zardozi embroidered panel, worked in silk and metal threads on a white silk ground, was stitched in India in the late 19th or early 20th century. At its centre is a peacock with its padded wings outstretched and feathers on display. A design of peacock feathers adorns all four borders. The peacock and feathers are worked in silk threads and silver and gold metal threads, namely passing threads, bullion, purl, pearl purl, and bright check. The goldwork stitches used include flat cutwork (goldwork), pearl purl application, and S-ing. There is couching throughout.
The body of the peacock and the feathers' eyes are three-dimensional, padded and covered in purple satin stitches and red French knots. This object's imagery and techniques are typical of Indian embroidery. The panel is backed with linen.
