Description

A letter (on paper headed 'Memorandum') written by Queen Mary in 1942, when she was residing in Badminton, Gloucestershire. In it she requests six strands of wool that were omitted from an embroidery kit she was completing. The text reads, 'Please send 6 strands of this wool which was omitted from the selection of wools for honeysuckle, I had to take some from another flower'.

Content description

A letter from Queen Mary, Queen of the United Kingdom and British Dominions and Empress of India. The paper is pre-printed with 'Memorandum' in decorative lettering on the left side. Underneath this, there is a pre-printed heading 'From' followed by a dotted line, with 'Badminton, Gloucestershire' printed below. On the right-hand side there is a dotted line for the date with '194' pre-printed, with 'T'" underneath, followed by two dotted lines. 'Queen Mary' has been written on the dotted line after 'From' and the date section has been filled in with '4th Octr' and '2' added after the 194. There is a line between this whole section and the written text below.

The handwritten text below the line reads, 'Please send 6 strands of this wool which was omitted from the selection of wools for honeysuckle, I had to take some from another flower'. By 1942 Queen Mary was Queen Mother and a keen needleworker. During the war she stayed at Badminton House, the principal seat of the Duke of Beaufort. The Royal School of Needlework has a collection of letters from Queen Mary in its Archive.
