Scope and content
This tracing of a design may show the battle of Pegasus and the Chimaera although in this Greek myth Pegasus is more usually depicted as a winged horse ridden by Bellerophon, the Chimaera is part lion, part dragon and part serpent. Another mythical beast this may represent is the hydra, the many headed serpent that killed Hercules, but this depiction of Hercules with wings would also be odd.
The tracing has a note which states 'copy not to be used' which suggest it is copied from another design source and was not an original product of the Royal School of Art Needlework. Although designs came from a variety of sources in the early history of the Royal School of Art Needlework the later work of the school would have been more conscious of copyright concerns. The source of this image has yet to be found.
