Book cover design for embroidery on tracing paper, Thomas a Kempis Front cover shows curling design border, with inside central fruit (possibly orange) tree inside a vase. Embroidering book covers had been popular for devotional texts and special gifts in the 16th and 17th centuries and enjoyed a revival in the 19th century as part of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Thomas a Kempis was a late medieval theologian and author of The Imitation of Christ a popular devotional text.
