Creator
Royal School of Needlework: Created by the Royal School of Art Needlework as miniaturised versions of designs. Original designs were miniaturised and either traced or copied onto 'Design Cards' which were sent out to clients for next day approval. This was part of the work of the 'Painting Room' sometimes referred to as the Paintroom, the department responsible for all design and draftsmanship.
Scope and content
Partial design card recording two border designs for embroidery, top portion of design card missing
One border shows stylised flower with turned back petals and pronounced stamens, leaves terminating in buds or berries, in a trailing design. Each group of flowers alternates with spray pointing up or down. The design is set within a plain border top and bottom. The other shows a line of individual sunflower or daisy type flowers above a single narrow border with a scrolling design.
Multiple borders were often shown on one card, to send to clients who were considering which border to choose for their commission.
